| Introduction
The Rothschilds shaped Tring and their legacy is immense. Because RMCA is based in the former Rothschild estate office the following document has been commissioned. The Counting House home of RMCA is on the site of the former Rothschild Estate Office. This document illustrates the changes from the 1870's to 1930's and today. Another document - The Rothschilds and Tring is a short account of the history and influence of the Rothschilds in and around Tring. | |

The Counting House, listed as a Grade II building in 1986, is on the site of a number of older buildings, one of which was the former Rothschild Estate Office. The original houses were remodelled and clad to make the building as it is today. The Rothschild Estate Office was used for the day to day running of the estate. The famous vault and strong room (since 1990, part of the RMCA suite of offices) were essential to store the large quantity of cash needed to pay the employees and local suppliers. It was also likely that the Rothschilds kept some of their more valuable items in the vault.
When Lord Rothschild came to Tring in 1872 it would have looked as it does in the above photograph. In Kelly's Trade Directory of 1882 the shops of Nos. 10,11 and 12 High Street seen here were Mrs Mary Prouse, saddler and harness maker, Mr Frederick Marsh, chemist and Mr James Jones, grocer.
